Golden Week in Japan is a week when there are four national holidays, from 29 April to 5 May, and when many Japanese workers get the week off to celebrate with family and friends, or travel. Since we don’t get any holidays here, we thought we’d bring Golden Week celebrations to Tokyo Bird, with a bunch of food and drink specials to get you feeling all festive.

Here’s what’s on for Golden Week at Tokyo Bird:

Wednesday, 29 April – Emperor’s Day or Showa no hi (昭和の日)
Celebrating the birthday of former Emperor Showa, Showa Day will be commemorated at Tokyo Bird with king prawns on the yakitori grill and a selection of regal Japanese sake cocktails: The Emperor featuring Australia’s own king of fruits – pineapple – shaken with sake, mint and lime, topped off with soda – or The Empress with sake, grapefruit, rosewater, mint and soda – only $12 each for Showa Day.

Monday, 4 May – Greenery Day or Midori no hi (みどりの日)
A day dedicated to the environment and nature, Tokyo Bird is going green for Midori Day with $12 Midori cocktails and free edamame to honour all super-tasty, green, melon-flavoured alcoholic beverages – the Japanese Slipper, Midori Illusion and Midori Splice included! Make it a #MidoriMonday!

Tuesday, 5 May – Children’s Day or Kodomo no hi (こどもの日)
Children’s Day at Tokyo Bird is a day to celebrate our inner child! In recognition for the child within, we’re doing our crowd-favourite katsu chicken nuggets with a Calpis highball (sake with Japan’s popular milky soft drink) for just $16 – if that’s not a happy meal, we don’t know what is!
